About the Country
Vietnam is a country blessed with scenic landscape and rich cultural legacy. The people are intensely free spirited with great national pride yet hospitable and friendly. Vietnamese paintings and quaint musical instruments like the nose flute are gaining significance worldwide.

The country spreads over an approximate area of 329,560 sq.km and the Capital is Hanoi. The total population of Vietnam is about 82, 5 Million and the official Language is Vietnamese. Besides it English, Chinese and French are also in use. The religions practiced are - Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity mainly Catholic.

Vietnam has China in the north, Laos and Kampuchea in the West, and the Pacific Ocean in the east. It is situated in the center of South-East Asia. The population is mainly Vietnamese with a miniscule percentage of Chinese. The Viet culture had originated along the deltas of the Red River and the Ma River; where the Viet people worked on their paddy fields. Essentially they are simple friendly people who are extremely creative and deeply spiritual.

A brief history of Vietnam
It was around 2ndt century B.C. that the forefathers of the present generation Vietnamese were invaded by the Han dynasty rulers of China. Vietnam was under Chinese occupation for 1000 years but they did manage to overthrow the Chinese and expand their empire till the Gulf of Siam in the south. But Vietnam chronically suffered from internal conflict and frequent civil wars.

In 1858 the country was attacked and colonized by the French. The patriotic Vietnamese never could come to terms with the French rule. The Vietnamese Communist party that was expert in carrying on underground operations continued with the struggle and it emerged strong in 1920 under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh.
In 1945 the Japanese ousted the French from Vietnam. The leaders of the Viet Minh (party formed by the great leader Ho Chi Minh) proclaimed the formation of a Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) and on September 2 1945 declared Vietnam independent.

Civil War: Soon irreconcilable differences evinced between Vietnamese communist and non-communist nationalists mainly in the south. Negotiations were impossible and in December 1946 fighting began with a Viet Minh attack on the French in Hanoi.

A long drawn three-sided struggle involving the Vietnamese Communists under the command of Ho Chi Minh; the Vietnamese Nationalists under Emperor Bao Dai and the French followed. It continued for a long time.

U.S. Assistance: In December 1961 President Diem requested assistance from the United States. America got embroiled in the Vietnam conflict and struggled to oust the communists from the land till 1970. After the war was over separate governments were maintained in the northern and southern parts of Vietnam. But in mid-November 1975 the two Vietnams were united. Post elections on July 2, 1976 the assembly ratified the reunification of the country and renamed it the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV).

Economy: After the reunification the country faced quite a lot of economic hardships. After 1980, with assistance from developed nations in the West, Vietnam achieved significant economic growth. Over a period of 5 years, the per capita rose to US$ 300 from $200. Every year, Vietnamese working abroad mainly in US send back millions of USD to families residing in Vietnam and this has boosted the indigenous economy.

The Vietnamese are now acutely conscious of the importance of English in career building. People are ready to pay good money to be proficient in the language. As a consequence the nation is fast becoming a market for TEFL jobs.
