Anywhere in Vietnam US dollars are accepted. Credit cards and Travelers cheques are accepted at hotels, restaurants and tourist centers. The currency exchange rate between US dollars and Vietnam dong is $1 to 16,038 dong (2007 rate).

Vietnamese currency is the Dong. It is used in various denominations from 500, to 500,000 banknotes are in circulation. Coins too are in use.

Night life is great in most metropolises. There are many discos and Karaoke bars.

Work hours: usually most shops, banks and businesses work from 8am to 4 or 5pm with a 1-2 hour lunch break

Voltage: In Vietnam mostly 220 volts are in use.

Safety measures: Tap water is unsafe, drink only bottled water and check the seal of the bottle.

It is always advisable to tour the country with a long time resident of the place, to save yourself from a possible rip off.

Photography is forbidden in railway stations airports and army base, use discretion when photographing locals.

Tipping is not essential in Vietnam but it will be appreciated.

People and culture: A special trait of the Vietnamese character is the deference and respect with which they treat their elders. They were originally simple farmers living in small villages, around a communal house. People in rural Vietnam still live the same way.

Vietnamese paintings and creative handicrafts have earned global reputation. Tourists come here to buy these items as well as to enjoy the picturesque landscape with fabulous beaches and thick forested mountains. Vietnam is rapidly becoming accessible to visitors from all across the globe. Its tourism industry is fast developing with everyone eager to experience life in Vietnam. As a consequence the nation is realizing the importance of English, which is the also the language for commerce and with exposure to the West and other developing nations Vietnam feels the need to quickly equip its population with English.

Beaches: Vietnam has a 3,000 kilometers long coast line speckled with many beaches. It has totally isolated beaches where you can enjoy total privacy, to beaches that house luxury resorts offering 5 star facilities. It has beaches covered in golden sand to the muddy unusual beach at the Tra Co, adjacent to China in the north of Vietnam. The beautiful beaches of Vietnam are mainly in Southern part of the country.
Halong Bay is famous for the many small island beaches that lie scattered around. The majority of islands is too steep and rocky, to have beaches and are usually visited by kayak as the water surrounding them is too shallow to allow tour boats.

Bai Chay beach is the closest to Hanoi and hordes of people visit it on weekends and in summer. It is noted for the seafood on offer, but not too pleasant in winter as it gets quite cold there.
