Living in Vietnam

TESOL Certification Course in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Mostly ESL teachers are employed by the universities. English is a popular subject among Vietnamese students at the university level. A native speaker of English will always be held in high esteem, often you might be requested to teach your colleagues and other faculty members.

One may also be employed as private tutor or as a part-time English teacher at language institutes attended mainly by Vietnamese adults. There are many opportunities for certified and experienced ESL teachers.

Living conditions:
In Vietnam an English teacher will be treated as a citizen of the country. To work in the country you will need a work visa.

You have to find your own accommodation. Hence you need to do some home work regarding the choice of lodging. The accommodation price depends on the area you will be teaching in. In a small village it will naturally cost much less compared to big cities. But villages offer limited teaching opportunities.

Ho Chi Minh City is a cosmopolitan city and life in the city is comfortable as almost all modern amenities are available. Accommodation is more expensive but there are lot more opportunities here. Many residents of the city are from Europe and Canada and US. It’s easier for ESL teachers to adjust to the environment in this city.

Hanoi, the capital, is in the north of Vietnam and center of power and governance. It has pronounced Chinese influence and quite different from the cities and villages in South of Vietnam.

Transportation in Vietnam is not very cheap. There are different modes of transport- taxi, motor bikes, bus, and rails. It would be good to invest in a sturdy bicycle if your place of work is close to home. Cycles are convenient.

The Vietnamese people happen to be very accommodating and amiable and their friendliness makes many a teacher select the country for teaching English.

Vietnamese are very open and liberal minded, though the main religion is Buddhism, they are not opposed to any religion.

The beautiful landscape also attracts teachers who love to travel and wish to gain in-depth knowledge of Vietnam.

What to expect
Teachers in Vietnam are not as well paid as their counterparts teaching in other Asian countries like Japan or South Korea.

Use the internet to locate jobs and it may not be easy to do so in Vietnam on your own. Teachers trained by TEFL International are fortunate as theycan expect full support for job assistance.

Entertainments
TEFL trainees at HO Chi Minh can the city on weekends. Visit its many museums, botanical gardens, waterways, temples, pagodas and churches. Some of the best specimens of Sino-Western architecture are found in the city.

The big cities have and active nightlife with karaoke bars, discos, and pubs catering to customers till wee hours in the morning. Cultural events- traditional Vietnamese as well as Western classical are organized at the theatre halls of the metropolises.

On weekends teachers and trainees can go for excursions. They can visit the beaches at Halong bay, or enter the Cu Chi Tunnels which served as a Vietcong base during the American War. They can also fly to Danag which has pleasant climate all the year round.

Vietnamese cuisine is very distinctive, they have health drinks (aphrodisiacs) which are stored in glass decanters with snakes and other venomous reptiles and mammals like bear cub, preserved in them.

Weather
December and April, when the humidity is lower, is a better time to visit Vietnam. November to March is very crowded. Ho Chi Minh City being only 10.5º north of the equator and 5m to 10m above the sea level, Ho Chi Minh City has a tropical climate. There are two main seasons: wet and dry. The wet season (summer) runs from May to November (June to August are the wettest months). During this time, there are heavy but short spells of shower almost every day around the afternoon. The dry season (winter) persists from December to April. Late February through May happens to be the hottest months, when it’s usually very humid, but it cool down slightly once the summer rainy season begins.
