TESOL Certification Course in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City is the biggest city in Vietnam. It covers an area of 2,029 square km and contains about 6 million inhabitants. The city stands along the Mekong Delta and is 50km away from the South China Sea and 1000 miles from Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh City truly represents the nation - Vietnam. It is where all the business and commerce happens; it is also where the Vietnamese culture is showcased. Attending a TEFL course conducted by TEFL International in the city is a rare opportunity for the ESL teacher trainees who are eager to teach English employing the TEFL teaching methodology.
History of Ho Chi Minh City
Originally called Prey Nokor, it used to be a small fishing village
along the marshy deltas. Its early residents were the Khmer people
and around 1623 people from Vietnam started to populate the area.
Under the rule of King Chey Chettha II of Cambodia the Vietnamese
refugees of a civil war were permitted to settle in the area, and
gradually the city became integral to Vietnam.
In 1859 the French army invaded the city and renamed it Saigon. It became the capital of French Indochina. It was during French rule that the classical Western-style buildings of Ho Chi Minh were built. It was called the ‘Pearl of the Orient.’ Saigon was controlled by the Japanese during World War II, but the French regained control after the war. They pulled out from the country in 1954, Saigon was the capital of the South Vietnam till North and South Vietnam united.
In 1975, the North Vietnamese captured Saigon and in 1976 the
country was unified. The city received its present name at around
this time. It was named Ho Chi Minh, to commemorate the great
leader and president of North Vietnam.
The tourist attractions:
Ho Chi Minh City houses first-rate museums, botanical gardens,
pagodas and churches; they are all inspiring and majestic. The TEFL
trainees can roam the city on the weekends, after a weeklong
exacting TESOL classes.
In Ho Chin Min city we witness the perfect blending of oriental and western classical architecture. There are numerous famous and grand pagodas in the vicinity of the city; such as the Giac Lam Pagoda.
Giac Lam Pagoda is one of the oldest pagodas in greater HCMC, and was constructed in 1744.
The Jade Emperor Pagoda which was built in 1909 by the Cantonese Congregation is representative of typical Chinese temple architecture.
The Notre Dame Cathedral, with its neo-Romanesque form and two 40m-high square shaped, iron spired towers loom above the city. It was erected between 1877 and 1883; it proudly stands in the government premises.
The Reunification Palace is another architectural grandeur. It is a fusion of modernity and tradition.
The Dam Sen Park holds unusual exhibits, like the large animals made of coconut shells and CDs. It has manicured lawns, lakes, pagodas, an ice-block wonderland and a roller coaster.
The Fine Arts Museum covers three floors. It is a French colonial building exhibiting all the features of decadent French opulence; in it are housed assorted art collections. The collection features work from the classical periods together with abstract and modern Vietnamese pieces and it covers three floors.
The garden cafe is a popular among the elderly as a rendezvous spot for enjoying spiced tea and exchanging stamps collection.
The History Museum is a perfect fusion of Sino-French architecture and should not be overlooked. The museum has a fine collection of artifacts illustrating the evolution of Vietnam’s civilization way back from the Bronze Age.
The War Remnants Museum stands as a stark reminder of the war excesses. On display are quaint armory, re-makes of cages used for holding Viet Cong prisoners, and a collection of soulful civil war photographs of the victims. Poignant history of Vietnam will be etched forever in the memories of the onsite TEFL trainees, just as the highly rational and scientific TEFL course will equip them with teaching skills that will be of benefit for a life time.
On weekends one can visit the Cu Chi Tunnels which served as a Vietcong base during the American War because of it location. The Vietcong built this amazing 200 km network of tunnels that remain hidden.
Evening and Nightlife
There are a number of dance clubs and bars that stay open for long
hours and trainees can unwind there. Else they can visit the
Municipal Theatre to enjoy traditional or western classical musical
soiree or watch traditional Vietnamese theatre. Then there is
always the Q Bar where you can go for a drink.
Ho Chi Minh can prove to be an unforgettable experience for the TEFL trainees signed up for the TEFL onsite course in Vietnam. In future one can also acquire ESL placements in the country.
Transport
Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of taxis. It is better to use the
metered ones. From airport to the city is 20 minutes by taxi.
Motorbike and bicycle can easily be hired from the many travel
agencies and backpacker Cafes dotted along Pham Ngu Lao Street.
Motorbike rentals range between US$ 5-10 per day and bicycle
rentals are US$ 1 per day. In Vietnam, car rentals mean chauffeured
cars.
A convenient and cheap mode of transportation within the city would help the international tourist to be comfortably mobile and will also help a TESOL certificate holder to profitably utilize the spare time once the TEFL-classroom sessions are over.
Weather
The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is the dry season between
December and April. Humidity is low around this time of the year.
The tourist season is from November till end of March. The city is
situated only 10.5º north of the equator and 5m to 10m above the
sea level, so it has a tropical climate. There are two main
seasons: wet and dry. The wet season (summer) runs from May to
November (June to August are the wettest months). During this time,
there are heavy but short spells of shower almost every day around
the afternoon. The dry season (winter) continues from December to
April. Late February through May happens to be the hottest months;
it is sultry too and cools a little only after the summer rainy
season begins.
