TESOL Certification Course in New York USA
USA is a land of great diversity and opportunities for teachers
and students of English alike. Most of the students come from South
East Asian countries of Korea and Japan, Latin American countries
of southern and Central America and from other parts of the world
too.
The main private language schools are located in Boston, New York,
Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Miami, and LA.
Whilst most of these schools will ask for an MA in TESOL or
equivalent, in practice this is not needed.
There is quite a demand for English classes and the private schools
are not under the state education system. These private language
schools often settle for a CELTA/TESOL certified teacher.
The wages of the teacher is dependent on experience and the fees
they are charging the language students.
There also exists a sizeable TEFL presence in the country’s
colleges and universities. The environment is largely similar to
the private language schools.
However universities usually insist on teachers having an MA in
TESOL or equivalent and a number of years teaching experience.
The TEFL markets in the USA in terms of teaching foreign students
vary depending on the strength of the dollar and the currency
strength of the country from which the student hails.
Relevant Information:
Usually teachers at private language schools will be employed on a
part time basis with an hourly wage ranging from $14-$25. A
teacher’s salary depends on the institution that employs him/ her.
Teacher’s working in colleges and universities will command a
higher rate of pay, but will often still be employed on a part time
basis.
Generally the part time work hours are 15 – 35 teaching hours per
week. The shifts are many from early morning, morning, afternoon,
evening, and weekend. Expect to teach different levels, age-groups,
and nationalities. The students are usually above 18 years except,
during summer camps when young children from Europe and Asia come
to do English language course.
