Living in Thailand
TESOL Certification Course in Thailand
Thailand, in general is not a very expensive place to
live in. Its economy is largely tourism based and foreigners are
extended every conceivable support by the local people and the Thai
government.
Thai people love to eat and the road side food stalls serve healthy
wholesome fare at a nominal price. The food is freshly prepared and
mainly vegetable and sea food based. The special Thai herbs and
spices add to its taste and flavor. Cost of food is less in rural
areas like Ban Phe and Chaing Mai as compared to metro cities.
Phuket being the most expensive place of all. Phuket has a lot of
farang (foreigner) residents and has the highest per capita income
among all Thai provinces in correspondence the cost of living is
also higher. Sample costs in Phuket:
Lunch plus soft drink $1.75
Hiring Scooter on monthly basis $67
Fish and chips cost $3.51
Chiang Mai and Ban Phe are very inexpensive places to live in:
These are some sample costs:
Hot meal $ 1.00
Bottle of beer $1.20
Bottle of water $0.20
20-minute motorbike taxi ride $0.50
If one is a little careful with spending it is easy to save money
in Thailand as the pay is quite good compared to the standard of
living.
Teachers with experience earn around 25000 to 35000 bhath per month
and the money is more than adequate for a comfortable living in
Thailand.
Thailand has all the modern amenities available in the big cities
and setting up and running home is no major challenge for even
novice teachers.
Thai are very friendly and accommodating and makes everyone feel
welcome, so one need not feel lonely and alienated in Thailand.
What to expect:
The teachers in Thailand are expected to teach around twenty four
classes in a week. In regular Thai schools the duration of a class
is between 50 to 60 minutes.
The regular schools work 5 days a week from Monday to Friday
teachers can enjoy the weekends. The ESL teachers must follow the
same routine as the other Thai teachers.
The Thai schools are quite conservative and expect the teachers to
behave and dress properly in school premises. The teachers’ duty
includes making lesson plans, attending morning assembly and every
week evaluate the progress made by the students, do exactly like
their Thai counterparts.
The Thai greatly revere their teachers, and the teachers are
expected to reciprocate it and behave accordingly. The teachers’
behavior should be above reproach not within the schools but also
when they are outside.
It is essential for ESL teachers in Bangkok or in any part of
Thailand to participate in English Clubs and English summer camps
with the other teachers. They have to prepare lesson plans in
collaboration with other ESL teachers. They must assist each other
with lesson plans and teaching.
It is the duty of the teachers to pay individual attention to the
students. ‘Greeting Activity’ is a common activity in the school
days and the teachers have to participate in it by turn.
The teachers are entitled to all the Thai national holidays and off
on weekends. In most of the schools western holidays are not
followed. And the ESL teachers are expected to participate whenever
an occasion is organized at the school.
Entertainments:
In Thailand the teachers have many places to visit and can pursue
various kinds of outdoor activities.
They can travel to Phuket where besides enjoying the sea and the
beach can visit the reserve parks like Khao Phra Thaeo National
Park, Bang Pae Waterfall, Ton Sai Waterfall, and the Mangrove
Forest, they contain exotic wildlife and pretty waterfalls.
• Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai is a scenic hill station encircled with
verdant mountains and dense forest and is a popular summer retreat
for most tourists. It is an ancient city of Thailand and preserves
three hundred Buddhist pagodas. Located by the Ping River Chiang
Mai has been able to conserve its ancient customs and values.
• Chao Phraya River; One can enjoy a languorous cruise down
swirling the ruddy river that is the life line of Thailand
• Ayutthaya- the capital of the old kingdom of Thailand. It is
situated north of Thailand. It has well preserved ruins of the
erstwhile capital. One can find traces of the past glory in the
faded frescos that adorn the temple walls, ravaged by the Burmese
and then by the onslaught of time.
•Pattaya the beach city that lies closest to Bangkok. It is a city
that never sleeps. The gogo bars the pubs the nightclubs and discos
are virtually open till dawn.
Ban Phe, a peaceful but picturesque fishing village with pristine
beaches is also becoming a favorite tourist haunt. It is the best
place for getting a closer look at Thai life.
They can go mountain trekking, windsurfing, snorkeling
or elephant riding. While for shoppers there are numerous malls and
complexes to buy fashionable but reasonably priced products.
Nightlife
Nightlife in Thailand is vibrant and thrilling, the most active
being in Pattaya and the least perhaps in Chiang Mai. One can dance
at the clubs and discotheques and go pub hopping till wee hours in
the morning. Whatever is your fancy or idea of fun Thailand will
most likely be able to satiate you.
