ECONOMY
While Indonesia was long touted for its sound macroeconomic
management and spectacular growth the Asian financial crisis in
1997/98 revealed the weak underpinnings of the economy: an
unhealthy banking sector untenable levels of private foreign debt
and uncompetitive practices that favored the financial interests of
former President SOEHARTO's family and friends led to the ruin and
collapse of Indonesian economy. Indonesia sought IMF assistance
early in the crisis and eventually brokered a $42 billion bailout
package. Since then things are looking up for Indonesia. The
Indonesian realize the importance of English education and ESL
market is pretty stable in the country.

Electricity in Indonesia
Power throughout most of Indonesia is 220 to 240 Volts AC. Power
cuts are frequent during the rainy season.
Indonesian Money & Currency
The currency of Indonesia is the Rupiah. At current exchange rates,
one Indonesian Rupiah is worth 0.0001 USD while one USD is worth
9,500.00 IDR.
Taxes, Tipping & Service Charges
Usually big restaurants in places like Bali add tax and service
charges on to the printed menu prices. This can add up to around
21% so be sure to check the menu when ordering to avoid surprises.
Where a service charge is not already added on, you may wish to tip
5% to 10% for good service.
Safety & Security in Indonesia
Anybody visiting Indonesia is wise to think about their safety and
security. The good news is that, given a minimum of precautions,
you can have a perfectly safe and enjoyable trip to anywhere in
Indonesia. In all major cities, such as Surabaya, Jakarta and Bali
hotels, shopping malls and other places that may attract large
numbers of people have security precautions in place.
There is visual search of all vehicles entering the parking areas
and security checks (looking in bags, metal detectors) on all
people entering the buildings. The checks are generally unobtrusive
and should not pose a problem for tourists. As with anywhere else
in the world today, be on your guard when visiting nightclubs or
other places that are packed - especially with westerners.
Theft can be a bit of a problem in Indonesia. Unfortunately,
pilferage is quite common at airports in the country, so make sure
all compartments of your checked bags are sealed. It is safer to
seal empty compartments of the bags as there have been accusations
of airport employees trafficking drugs in unsuspecting passengers'
bags. Pickpockets can also be a problem in places with a lot of
tourists. Be careful where you keep your valuables. Beware of
touts. As in any poor country that attracts a lot of tourists,
there are a lot of people hoping to relieve you of your money, one
way or another. The assault you receive when arriving at airports
can be particularly annoying. If you really hate that kind of
thing, consider ordering an airport transfer for hassle free
departure to the hotel.
People and culture
Indonesians are friendly people and despite Islam being the most
commonly practiced religion, the culture proudly followed by the
nation is rooted in its Hindu and Buddhist past.
The present day culture of Indonesia is a product of various
cultural influences from ancient Hindu to Islamic to Western
thoughts brought by Portuguese traders and Dutch colonists. The
basic principles, include the concepts of mutual assistance or "gotong
royong" and consultations or "musyawarah" to arrive at a consensus
or "mufakat". Originating in rural life, this system is still very
much in use in community life throughout the country. Though the
legal system is based on the Old Dutch penal code, social life as
well as the rites of passage is founded on customary or "adat" law,
which differs from area to area. ''Adat'' law has been instrumental
in maintaining gender equality in Indonesia.
Indonesian art forms are greatly influenced by religion. The famous
dance dramas of Java and Bali are derived from Hindu mythology and
often feature fragments from the Hindu epics such as Ramayana and
Mahabharata.
The crafts of Indonesia vary in both medium and art
form. As a whole the people are artistic by nature and express
themselves on canvas, wood, metals, clay and stone. The batik
process of waxing and dyeing originated in Java centuries ago and
classic designs have been modified with modern trends in both
pattern and technology. There are several centres of Batik in Java,
the major ones being Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Pekalongan and Cirebon.
Indonesia is rich in handicrafts. Various forms of handicrafts
practiced are: woodcarvings for ornamentation and furniture,
silverwork and engraving from Yogyakarta and Sumatra; filgree from
South Sulawesi and Bali with different styles of clay, sandstone
and wood sculptures. These are but a few of the handicrafts found
in Indonesia.
Religion in Indonesia: The majority (about 88%) of the
population follows Islam. In fact Indonesia is the nation with
largest Muslim population. However, freedom of religion is provided
by the Indonesian Constitution, which is defined in the First
Principle of the State Philosophy' "Pancasila", which upholds a
"Belief in One Supreme God". Others religions followed in Indonesia
are Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism.
Weather
The main aspect of Indonesia’s climate is rainfall. It rains almost
uniformly all the year round and keeps the temperatures on land
remain pretty constant. The equator passes right through the
country and the climate is mainly tropical, with the coastal plains
around 28°C, the inland and mountain areas about 26°C, and the
higher altitude areas, 23°C.
The area's relative humidity ranges between 70 and 90 percent. The
monsoons usually blow in from the south and east in June through
September.
