Surabaya is the harbor from where usually tourists
take the boat to Bali or Sulawesi. Suabaya is more than just
another harbor. It is an interesting old city, with shopping areas
in the centre and full of hustle and bustle; a typical Asian
metropolis.
History Surabaya
Surabaya was founded some time towards the end of the 13th century.
The name derives its name from the legendary battle that took place
between a "shark" and a "crocodile". Surabaya, this name is coined
from the names of these two animals that fought to establish its
superior strength over the other. The city is littered with statues
and reliefs depicting the grand battle.
The city was created around the time the Mongul-Chinese
invaders were expelled from the country and the Hindu Majapahit
Empire came to power; which ruled the area for nearly 200 years.
After the decline of Majapahit, Surabaya was under the sultanate
rule and spent the next 200 years fighting off the Islamic Mataram,
Madura and the Dutch.
The city ultimately conceded defeat to Mataram early in the
seventeenth century in one of the bloodiest battles in Java's
history. Mataram too was weakened by the long war and the Dutch
East Indies Company occupied and colonized it. The Dutch turned
Surabaya into a major trading port and a naval base.
During World War II the Japanese occupied the city. Indonesian
nationalists evicted the Japanese in 1944. But in 1945 the Dutch
and their western allies returned and tried to regain control over
the city.
When in 1945 the Dutch flag was being hoisted over what is now the
Hotel Majapahit it started off a series of events that led to the
"Battle of Surabaya" and finally to Indonesian independence on 17
August 1949.
Your trip to Surabaya will allow you to gain intimate knowledge
