Calcutta or Kolkata is truly a cosmopolitan city. People of all faiths and beliefs reside peacefully in the city. Majority of the residents of the city are Hindus (74%) and Muslims (23%) by religion. Sikh, Christian, Jain, Parsis, Buddhists and others make up the rest of the population. There is a Jewish Synagogue at the intersection of Canning Street and Brabourne Road. A Parsee Fire Temple stands on MetCalf Street, Beliaghata.

Accommodation is cheaper in Kolkata compared to the other metros in India. One bed room apartments on rental cost about Rs 3000. Paying guest facilities are easily available; it usually includes food and boarding. It’s a good way o know the people of the city and the culture.

Food products as well as entertainments like watching movies, theatre, and musical concerts are considerably cheaper here.
A decent meal for two at a good restaurant will lighten your pocket by Rs 700- 1000. Kolkata is famous for its restaurants. Eating out is a passion for Bengalis. Experiment with food but be careful with the water. Drink bottled water and buy it from department store.

The Chinese cuisine is something that all visitors to the city must try out.

Most Night clubs and discos the entry fee is pretty affordable too.

The good restaurants usually include a service charge in the bill amount, but tips are always appreciated. Tip shouldn’t be more than 10% of the billed amount.

Kolkata dwellers love to read and the famous College Street is lined with book stalls where one can buy rare books at cheap and affordable rates, of course they are mostly second hand books.

In Kolkata one can easily spend hours rummaging through the amazingly affordable embroidered and handloom fabrics at the New Market.

One can visit the many shopping malls and check out for specials and buy branded goods at huge discounts.

Transport
Kolkata is the first city to have the underground railway service in India and it is still the best and the cleanest and less tiring way to travel within the city.

There are bus services and Taxis. The traffic snarl is less but still quite bad so if one is travelling from north to south Kolkata the best mode of transport would be the subway or ‘Metro’.

Taxis run on meter but its best to carry a tariff chart. They are easily available.

The summer months of April – June are hot, humid and sultry. The Temperature in summer varies between 24-38Celsius sometimes soaring as high as 42 Celsius. There are occasional thunderstorms in the evenings that make the nights almost pleasant.
The rainy or Monsoon season months extend from mid June to early September and bring the much needed respite from the scorching summer. The rainfall is heavy and roads within the city are often water logged, the situation is better now and Kolkata hasn’t experienced flood since 1978. The average Rainfall is about 160cm

The autumn months of September and October are very pleasant. It is also the time for festivities. The biggest festival Durga Puja is held at this time. The weather being pleasant adds to the festive spirit.

The winter is perhaps the most pleasant season in Kolkata. From end November to End February is cool with a slight nip in the air. It is the tourist season as well. The temperature never goes below 10 Celsius, it ranges between 12-27Celsius
March is spring time and still the weather is pleasant and Kolkatans celebrate spring with the famous festival of colours HOLI.
