Living in Greece

TESOL Certification Course in Corinth, Greece

Greece is a member of the EU and has a stable economy till date the cost of living is 30% lower than that of the other European countries. Also do enroll for a Greek language course, it is handy for ESL teachers to have a certificate in Greek language.

It holds the 22nd rank in the world wide Quality-of-life Index. All modern amenities are available in Greece. Even the smallest village is spanking clean and has internet and satellite / cable connection. Food is also inexpensive as grocery is fresh and locally produced.

But in big cities like Athens the cost of living is higher. The Greek cuisine is delicious and their herbs and Feta cheese are easily available. It makes sense to eat at home if one is eager to save money.

What is expensive is processed food or American style food. Local stuff is very reasonable.

Mykonos or Rhodes are tourist resorts and is naturally expensive than in mainland cities such as Ioannina or Thessalonica. It all depends on the place you choose to live. Food is much cheaper on the mainland than on the islands. If you switch to a Mediterranean diet, which includes a lot of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish, you will save money and it is healthier too.

Though the salary is lower than EU salary, food and commodity price is cheaper than UK even now that it has gone up. Clothing and shoes do not come cheaper. They cost the same as in other EU nations. One can expect to spend 100 euro per month on clothing.

Broad band satellite/cable installation is everywhere. So you can remain connected with the world at all times even when living in a village in the remote mountains.

Single bedroom apartment in a city costs 500 euro every month
Greece is an economical place. The food is fresh and the transportation cheap
However, electricity and telephone bills are high. You can have lower telephone bills if you have a mobile phone or use a card phone, and your electricity bill won't rise too much if you don't leave the heating on for hours or forget to turn the lights off.

If you wish to calculate an average cost of living in Greece, you should consider your personal lifestyle, since how much you spend and where depends on it. If you want to eat imported processed food you pay more as they are higher priced.
It is the same for gadgets and household appliances. Foreign imported stuff is expensive.

The cost of living has gone up lately but still, compared to America and much of the rest of Western Europe, Greece is considered an inexpensive country.

Travel:
Use a car rental company service if you need one or get a second hand car lot ( a 'mandra' in Greek).
A small house or apartment within easy reach of your work is much better than a bigger house on the outskirts, even if it is cheaper, since you will spend time and money every day just travelling and parking a car. Avoid public transport if you can walk or cycle.

People and culture
Greece is a country of a varied interest and cultures, because of the many invasions endured by the Greek people for ages and also as it lies at the intersection between the East and the West.

Greeks are intensely proud of their culture, and justifiably so.

Traditions, religion, music, language, food and wines are the essential components of the Greece culture and herein lies its appeal for those who wish to visit the beautiful country of Greece.

Greecian Traditions & Customs
Traditions in Greece is largely religious with a lot of pagan influence.
Many Greeks are very superstitious and believe a lot in religious dogmas as well as in supernatural or paranormal phenomenon. Many visitors find it interesting and curious.

Greece Religion
The Greek population is composed of a 97% of Christian Orthodox. The rest of the population is Muslim, Roman Catholic and Jewish. Greece and Russia are the only countries to have such a proportion of people belonging to the Orthodox Church.

Music
Greeks love music and being a much invaded country its music too is an assimilation of different influences both from Eastern and Western culture of Asia and Europe.

Food & Wine
Greek cuisine is famous for its freshness of its products and its delicious taste. Wine too is wonderful.
Some dishes are the same everywhere in Greece, whereas some others are local culinary specialties or same dishes cooked in different manners (in the Greek islands, Crete, Thessaloniki, etc…).

Ferries
To get to the islands you will mostly have to take a ferry. There are extensive connections from Athens and in-between islands for "hopping." Ferries are about the one thing in Greece that leave on time so BE PROMPT. In August, ferries fill up due to the National holiday (Aug 15) so plan ahead. The new "fast ferries” are covering distances faster but one has to pay more for the ride. The two main ports at Athens are: the main port Piraeus and outlying Rafina.

One thing is certain, if you live in Greece you’ll never be bored or lonely and become healthier as well.
