In the present times English is the language in which the world communicates. It is the language of business transactions, academic discussions and simply the most used language in the world. People prefer to use English when interacting with other nationalities. A report predicts that soon speakers who use English as a subsidiary language will exceed the number of mother-tongue speakers. So the demand for trained ESL teachers is ever on the rise. ESL Teaching can be very rewarding, exciting as well as challenging career.
What to expect
Teachers in Greece have the following clear advantages:
Accommodation is free usually provided by the schools
They get to learn the Greek language and make many new friends
They get to appreciate Greek customs and participate in celebrations and can have a great time for an academic year or more.
Many a times the teachers have been bewitched by Greece and have stayed on and settled down.
Others prefer to relocate in Greece after retirement.
The teachers can visit the many incredible tourist destinations and few find enough time to see them all: Athens, Thessalonica, the Greek Islands of Mykonos, Crete, Santorini, Rhodes.
In Greece previous teaching experience is not always mandatory.
Most schools do not require previous experience.
TEFL /TESOL certificate is required. Sometimes schools train the
teachers in Athens or at Corinth.
Salary & Work hours
For a first time teacher, an hourly rate starts at 8.35 euros. For
those who have got previous experience the hourly rate is higher,
but most schools avoid experienced teachers for that reason.
Work hours are around 25 hours teaching a week, you may get 835
euros per month.
A small percentage is subtracted for the IKA insurance (the owner
will pay the rest) so it may come down to 800 euros net.
If you work more hours you get more. Some schools require 30 hours
teaching per week.
However, there are big schools that require experienced teachers
and pay well, so you should ask about the hourly rate before you
agree to anything.
Other benefits include free housing (not always), 4 weeks' paid
holiday and bonuses during Christmas and Easter seasons.
Qualifications range from BA or BSc in any discipline to TESOL
Certificates. Some schools require native speakers, preferably
British or Irish, American or Australian citizens. However,
teachers from other ethnic groups may find teaching position in
Greece if they have a university degree in English Language.
For example, teachers from Romania work in Corfu Language schools
and one of them has set up her own Language school on the island
after marrying a Greek citizen.
Also, a certificate of competency in the Greek language is needed.
Language schools are obliged to abide by the recent law on this
issue, so start learning Greek before accepting a position!
The above apply to those who wish to work in an established private
school.
Those who wish to freelance and teach English at home, then you can
do it at your own risk since it is not allowed without a licence.
However, many teachers teach at home first and then find a position
at a school.
They teach 2-4 students at home or at a student's home and their
fees start from 10 euros per hour.
The current rate (approved by the Greek Ministry) is 20 euros per
hour.
To teach at home legally, you should get a licence for home
teaching that is issued by the Ministry of Education.
As an ESL teacher you will get to explore the lovely Greek islands
and absorb the local culture learn the language and make many
friends
