The world has always been fascinated by the amazing inventions and rich heritage of China. It is one of the oldest civilizations and the people have endured much turmoil and revolution yet has come out of it stronger than ever before. Modern China is undoubtedly a superpower and doesn’t hesitate to throw its weight around.

The present China on October 01, 1949 became Communist state. After the fall of Soviet Union it is the only major communist state in the world.

China is the largest country in Asia. It has a very diverse terrain from mountains to deserts it contains them all.The western China is dry and desert like while the eastern part has the fertile Deltas and the Northern China is mountainous. Since the topography of the land is varied the climate and the vegetation is not uniform. The varied flora and fauna of China is a naturalist’s delight.

China is also home to different ethnic nationals – the biggest group is Han followed by Zhuang, Uygur, Mongols, Manchus, Tibetans.

The official language is Mandarin Chinese. Cantonese and Hakka dialects are also in use.

The country has no official religion as it is a communist state but one finds Buddhists, Taoists and small percentage Christians and Muslims.

China boasts of great cultural and artistic accomplishments that go back to 3,000 years and more. They are justifiably proud of their artistic achievements.

Modern China is fast evolving into an economic super power. Post Deng Xiaoping reign China has entered the phase of liberal communism but the state machinery still exerts great control over people’s right to information, their fundamental rights and their freedom of movement.

The greatest achievement of China in the recent past is organizing the Beijing Olympic games of 2008. It was a spectacular feat and held the world spell bound. Prior to the games and post Olympics the demand for ESL teachers in Modern China is dramatically on the rise.

Over the last few years, private language institutes and companies are flourishing in China. It offers great placement opportunities to ESL teachers. One will never have a dull moment in this country there is so much to explore and experience.

Economy of China
In the past few decades, China has grown into a significant economic power with considerable growth in the economic sector.
In the 1950s, country’s economy went largely under state control. It was for the state to decide on production, pricing, and distribution of goods and services. Then in 1979, China put economic reforms into action and tried to modernize its economy. These reforms permitted the creation of a market economy and promote foreign investment, consequently the economy grew by 10.2 percent in the 1980s. All the same, the state still retains a dominant role in China's economy.

The global recession of 2009 was largely contained by the massive financial assistance of the Chinese government and the government’s policy helped the nation and the world to steer clear from total economic collapse. China’s economic might is felt all across the world from the mines of South America to the remote villages of Central Africa. The promising economy of China is boosting the demand for ESL teachers as well. China needs to communicate with the world and English is the language of business and commerce.
