ESL Jobs Australia

TEFL Certification Course in Sydney, Australia

  •  Australia is a country for ESL teachers who are driven by a spirit of adventure. There are many outdoor activities and sports in Australia. If one opts for teaching in the less visited zones of the country, especially in northern Australia, there is adventure in the very surrounding, which is the barren and ragged Australian outback.

  • Australia has more than two hundred TEFL schools, that are mostly located in Sydney, Queensland cities and Perth , with smaller numbers in Melbourne and Adelaide .

  • The Australian economy flourishing and there exists shortages of all skilled professionals including teachers with TEFL qualifications.

  • The country's climate, lifestyle, exotic landscape, high standard of living, safety and surf all contribute to its ongoing attraction for EFL teachers and trainees alike.

Salary and hours

  • Australia’s Award system standardizes salaries and conditions which are bound by law.

  • Teachers’ wages vary from AUD175 to AUD230 per day. It depends a lot on qualifications and experience. The higher the experience the salary is in commensurate with it.

  • A CELTA graduate with three years' experience could expect AUD180, pre-tax.

  •  A teacher is expected to teach maximum 25 hours per week.

  • During the peak season which is usually between September to December and to a lesser extent through to March, the TEFL teachers are fully engaged and more.

  • As a general rule, colleges are interested only in CELTA or Trinity graduates.

Classes:

  • The most common types of classes are General English, and Cambridge & IELTS exam preparation courses.

  • The majority of students are school goers and they basic need to prepare for the Cambridge examinations. A large number of the students are aged 18 – 25.

  • In Australia there is little to almost no demand for Business English or English for young learners. ESL teachers here primarily teach general English.

  • Group tours, commonly held in July – August, are for teenage students.

  • Class strength is not more than 20 students per class.

  • In some cases individual attention is provided to very weak students.

Accommodation

  • Accommodation, which is not generally provided for teachers, is more expensive in Sydney; less so in the other capitals.

  • In Perth for example, a room in a shared house costs about AUD120 – 150 a week.

  • The best time to look for work in the week before Christmas.
