Among the South American countries after Brazil Argentina is the biggest in population and size. It has Bolivia and Paraguay on the north, with Uruguay and Brazil on the east, to its west is the Atlantic Ocean. To the south of the country are the fertile Pampas that support the agro-based economy of Argentina. The country also has Aconcagua (22,834 ft, 6,960 m) the highest peak outside of Asia.
Argentina is a derivative of the Latin term for silver -‘argentum’. The bountiful pampas where the gauchos or Argentinean cowboys herd cattle and the farmers tend to fields that are lush with best quality wheat; has earned Argentina the titles - the ‘granary’ of the world and the ‘slaughter house’ too.
Argentina is also the birthplace of Tango the passionate and sensual dance form a rave all over the world. It is the land for party lovers and those who love their steak.
Argentina is the Latin American country where the majority of the population is of European origin, either Spanish or Italian the indigenous or mestizo population of Argentina’s is very small and is restricted to the northwest part of the land.
The capital city Buenos Aires is where all action happens! It is a wonderful vibrant city. However it is more European than Latino. You can travel all across the country with Buenos Aires as your base. In the west the Andes Mountains are ideal for outdoor sports like skiing, trekking, paragliding etc.
Ushuaia is for nature lovers to roam and admire the rugged terrain with glaciers and wild animals. While the beaches of the capital are packed with merry makers and the mood is mostly festive.
Economy
Argentina's economy was customarily agriculture dependent, but in
recent years the service industry and the manufacturing sector have
made significant progress. Its wealth has been generated by
Livestock (cattle and sheep) rearing and cultivation of grain
mainly wheat. Argentina equals the United States, Canada, and
Australia as a producer of mutton, beef, wool wheat, corn and oats.
The nation’s chief manufacturing unit is meat packaging, flour processing, and canning of fruits and vegetables. It has now forayed into other industries - steel manufacturing, motor vehicles, textiles, chemicals, petrochemicals etc.
In the last few decades Argentina has gone through recession and inflation. President Menem in 1990s had introduced privatization and other economic reforms and they have resulted in unparalleled economic growth. Some problems still linger mainly unemployment, corruption at various levels. But the economy has been revitalized since 2003.
In 2004 there was an increase in exports and new jobs were created as foreign investments made a comeback and internal consumption also increased and the economy is booming.
Argentineans are now keener than ever to be fluent in English and the ESL job market is doing great in Argentina!
